今年2月、32年というあまりにも短いその生涯に幕を下ろしたJ・ディラことジェイ・ディー。病床の彼が他界する直前まで取り組んでいたという、文字どおりの遺作がこれだ。新作『The Big Bang』にもビートを提供されていたバスタ・ライムズのイントロダクションが、こちらの感傷的な思いを払拭するかのように力強く響く今作には、他にも多くのゲストが参加。盟友マッドリブはもちろん、コモンとディアンジェロの甘美なコラボ、互いの世界観が溶け合うドゥウェレとのトラック、ブラック・ソートとファロア・モンチも故人との仲を確かめ合うように各々のフロウで呼応する。独創的でいてさりげないソウル・サンプルの扱い方やあのビートメイクは今作でもディラらしさを誇っており、聴くほどに心地良さを増して虜にさせられる。この人の作るトラックをもっと聴きたかった、と改めて思わせるには十分な傑作……感傷的になっちゃったね。
