第二次大戦のアフリカ戦線における伝説的名将、ジョージ・パットンの伝記映画。あまりにもエネルギッシュかつアナーキーでダーティなヒーローをジョージ・C・スコットが怪演。脚本は、フランシス・フォード・コッポラ。『猿の惑星』の次に名匠シャフナーが手掛けた戦争映画大作に盟友ゴールドスミスは、キャッチーなトランペットのフレーズ、ダイナミックに躍動するアクション・シーンのオーケストラに、そこここにメロディアスなフレーズやストリングスを決めつつ、芳醇な男の映画の映画音楽を堪能させる（今回のCDの1枚目には、99年にFSMでCD化されたフィルム用マスターからの16曲に、97年にレーザーディスクでリリースされた際に収録されていた1曲目と、ラストにトランペットのエコーを何度も試した際の録音(苦労した跡が推察できる)テープの音源を収録。2枚目に初CD化となる、LP用マスターを収録）。 (C)馬場敏裕

This limited-edition CD was assembled from the original music tracks recorded for the feature films Patton and Flight of the Phoenix, composed, respectively, by Jerry Goldsmith and Frank DeVol. The audio quality throughout is excellent, and there's no questioning the value of any or all of the music, though strangely enough, despite the fact that Patton is the better and greater of the two scores, it is Flight of the Phoenix that will most interest listeners, if only because it is not otherwise represented on CD, whereas Goldsmith has done two other versions of the Patton score. DeVol's music for Flight of the Phoenix at times sounds like Lawrence of Arabia-lite, but it has a lot more diversity than this shorthand would indicate, featuring fascinating dissonances in its Middle Eastern flavoring. It's a bargain for serious soundtrack enthusiasts, even at the $20.00 list price. ~ Bruce Eder
