マニック・ストリート・プリーチャーズの名盤セカンド・アルバム『ゴールド・アゲインスト・ザ・ソウル』を、豪華ブック仕様のCD2枚組で再発

イギリスを代表するバンド"マニック・ストリート・プリーチャーズ"。彼らが1993年にリリースしたセカンド・アルバム『ゴールド・アゲインスト・ザ・ソウル』の再発盤が完全生産限定盤として発売。120ページ・A4サイズの本の形態をとるこの再発盤には、バンドの撮影を長年手掛けてきたMitch Ikeda氏による未発表写真の数々が掲載され、その多くにニッキー・ワイアー(B/Vo)が私的な注釈を寄せている。また、バンド所有のアーカイヴからタイプや手書きによるオリジナルの歌詞も掲載。本に同梱される2枚のCDにはリマスタリングを施したアルバム本編、未発表デモ音源、同時代からのB面曲、リミックス、ザ・クラッシュのカバー「ワッツ・マイ・ネーム」のライヴ録音が収録される。

『ゴールド・アゲインスト・ザ・ソウル』はデビュー作『ジェネレーション・テロリスト』から、わずか1年余ののちにリリースされると同時にUKチャート、トップ10入りを果たし、音楽的にはクラシック・ロック的なサウンドへの転換を遂げ、マニックス・サウンドの基本形が確立された作品となった。リード・シングル「絶望の果て(From Despair To Where)」に続き「哀しみは永遠に消え去らない(La Tristesse Durera [Scream To A Sigh])」、「ローゼズ・イン・ザ・ホスピタル?囚われた快楽 (Roses In The Hospital)」、「失われた夢(Life Becoming A Landslide)」がリリースされた。当時も今も彼らに様々な形で携わっているデイヴ・エリンガがプロデュースを手掛けたこのアルバムは、アウトサイド/フックエンド・スタジオで6週間にわたってレコーディングされた。

ニッキー・ワイアーは今回のリリースについてこう語った。「2、3年前にスタジオを移転したとき、『ゴールド・アゲインスト・ザ・ソウル』時代のデモや写真をたくさん発掘したから、日の目を見せないのは勿体ないと思ってね。以前はこのアルバムについて決してべた褒めしたことはなかったけど、今にしてみれば、ファンのお気に入りがたくさん入った、奇妙で興味をそそるアルバムだった。ジェームス(Vo/G)がライヴで「スリープフラワー(嘆きの天使)」のリフをほのめかすと、いつもものすごく大きな反応があるんだ」。

Taking the hard rock inclinations of Generation Terrorists to an extreme, the Manic Street Preachers delivered a flawed but intriguing second album with Gold Against the Soul. Inspired by Guns N' Roses, the Manics decided to rework their working-class angst as heavy arena rock; they seize upon the latent politicism of Guns N' Roses' tortured white-trash metal, interpreting it as a call to arms. Since the Manics are more intellectual and revolutionary than the Gunners, Gold Against the Soul burns with inspired, if confused, rhetoric. The Manics, however, aren't quite as gifted with hooks at this stage -- their power derives from their self-belief, which they can't quite translate into songs. They are given a bigger, louder production on Gold Against the Soul, which makes the album a more visceral listen than Generation Terrorists, but the songs aren't as consistently compelling as those on the debut. "From Despair to Where" is a vibrant anthem, and "Drug Drug Druggy," "Roses in the Hospital," "Yourself," and "Sleepflower" all have a similar energy, but the peaks don't arrive quite as frequently as before. Nevertheless, the rage is more articulate and the sound is stronger, making Gold Against the Soul a flawed but worthy step forward. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
