ハンガリー出身のユダヤ系作曲家パウル・アブラハムの喜歌劇《サヴォイの舞踏会》。
1932年12月に初演されたこの作品は、既婚男性が妻に嘘をついて舞踏会に出席、それを知った妻が仕返しをするという、ヨハン・シュトラウス2世の《こうもり》を彷彿させるコミカルな筋立て。当時流行していたジャズ・バンドやタンゴを音楽に組み込んだことにより、ワイマールやベルリンを中心にセンセーションを巻き起こし、果てはレハール作品に並ぶ世界的なヒット作となりました。しかし1933年、ベルリンの映画スタジオで働いていたアブラハムは、ナチスによってドイツを追われ一旦ブダペストに戻り、この作品もドイツでは"退廃音楽"とみなされ上演が禁止されてしまいます。それでもアブラハム作品はヨーロッパの他の国で人気を保ち、彼も避難先のウィーンやパリで映画音楽や喜歌劇の創作を続けました。しかしファシズムの侵攻に伴い、1940年にキューバを経てニューヨークに亡命。ここで心機一転を図りましたが、当時のニューヨークではガーシュウィンとコール・ポーターが人気を獲得しており、残念なことにアブラハムの作品が注目されることはありませんでした。その後ドイツに戻るも寂しい晩年を送り、1960年にひっそりと生涯を終えています。
この上演は英語版による世界初録音となるものです。
