フォーレは室内楽やピアノ曲で人気がありますが、フランス歌曲のおける最も偉大な巨匠として100を超える名品を残しています。そのなかには「月の光」や「夢のあとに」のようによく知られたものもあります。
このアルバムは1984年生まれのフランスのテノール、シリル・デュボワが相方ピアニスト、トリスタン・ラエとフォーレ歌曲に挑戦したもので、ひとりの歌手による全集は初とされます。彼らはこれまでもリストやブリテンの歌曲集で優れた演奏を披露してくれましたが、何より非の打ち所のないフランス語の発音と並外れた解釈がフォーレにピッタリ。詩の雰囲気や感情、気分を自然に伝えてくれます。
フォーレの歌曲は長い生涯にわたり書かれているため、4つの作風に分けられるとされます。1860-70年代はロマンティックで、どちらかというとセンチメンタルで暗い情感のものが支配的。1880年代は高踏派の詩人によるものが多く優美。1890年代は大胆で力強い表現が顕著。20世紀に入ってからは渋い内省性に加え、大胆な和声など時代の影響も感じられます。そのいずれをもデュボワは味わい深い表現で聴かせてくれます。

Its not common that complete editions of anything hit classical best-seller lists; listeners tend to make an emotional connection with individual items, not with encyclopedic sets. But this box set of Faures complete songs by tenor Cyrille Dubois, with his longtime accompanist Tristan Raes, made the charts in the summer of 2022, and one can see why. For one thing, it represents the first time a single singer has recorded the whole set of more than 100 songs. Thats quite an accomplishment, for the songs are of various types and lie all over the conceivable tenor voice range. Most singers can simply avoid weak spots by picking and choosing, but its very hard to find a weak spot in Dubois cycle. He can handle quiet, lyrical pieces; conversational songs; and the few more powerful and dramatic items equally well. Better still, Dubois is a master of French diction with an uncanny ability to enter into the texts he is singing. Faure is thought of as a conservative, but he set texts by Verlaine and Baudelaire that were on the forward edge of French poetry, and Dubois gives these the proper emphasis. In pictorial songs like La fleur qui va sur leau, Op. 85, No. 2, he is extraordinarily evocative. Raes stays properly in the background in songs that rarely feature a prominent part for the accompanist, but he is a highly sensitive player. The sound from Pariss Salle Colonne is entirely idiomatic. Buyers simply felt that this recording would be likely to offer many hours of listening pleasure, and indeed it will. ~ James Manheim
