Funk Wav Bounces Vol.2＜Glow In The Dark Vinyl＞

Compared to its 2017 predecessor, Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 2 isnt quite as thrilling and revelatory an experience, sounding more like the B-sides or afterthoughts of a far superior model. Calvin Harris can still craft a catchy earworm, and these songs are pleasing enough. However, the bulk of the effort consists of tracks that are interchangeable at best and forgettable at worst. This time around, the vibe is smooth, chilled-out, and a little boring. Rather than being another fun, beach/pool-friendly romp, Vol. 2 is a collection of groovy comedown moments fit for smoke-filled lounges and other dark corners of hedonism. That being said, there are some absolute gems here, including "Potion" with Dua Lipa and Young Thug, a welcome carbon copy of Vol. 1s smash hit "Feels" with Katy Perry, Big Sean, and Pharrell Williams. Elsewhere, 21 Savages funk-bass "New Money" stands out with quirky lyrics (including the jarring and maybe a little gross "kush smell like armpit"), while the disco sparkle of "Stay with Me" at least sounds like Justin Timberlake, Halsey, and a returning Pharrell are having fun. Otherwise, Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 2 sounds like the album one might slap on after the Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 1 party ends and everyone is ready to crash. ~ Neil Z. Yeung

5年ぶりの新作。ディスコ～ファンク・テイストを全面に打ち出した軽やかな聴き味は名実共に前作の続編となる。ギャップ・バンド"Outstanding"みたいな"Obsessed"をはじめ、フィリー・ソウル、ウェッサイ・ヒップホップ、AORなどのカルヴィン流オマージュも抜群だし、随所に入る泣きのギターやストリングスによって楽曲のリッチ感も増した印象だ。抜群のリゾート感に少しの黄昏ムードが入り混じる夏のサントラ盤。
