2006年から15年間、ロイヤル・リヴァプール・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の首席指揮者を務めたワシリー・ペトレンコに代わり、2021年9月から新たな首席指揮者に就任したアルメニア系ベネズエラの若き注目指揮者、ドミンゴ・インドヤン。ONYXからはこれまでに、フランスの管弦楽作品集、ラテン・グラミー賞獲得作曲家、ロベルト・シエッラによる交響曲第6番、イタリア・オペラの前奏曲&間奏曲集、そして、東京エムプラスの創立30周年を記念した日本限定盤として、チャイコフスキーの交響曲第6番《悲愴》(ライヴ録音!)をリリース。5枚目となる本アルバムでは、2024年に生誕200周年を迎えるブルックナーの名作『交響曲第4番(ロマンティック)』を取り上げています。

この交響曲は、ブルックナーが50歳を迎えた1874年に第1稿が完成しましたが、初演機会の無いまま78年から80年にかけてスケルツォの新稿への入れ替えを含む本格的な改訂が行われ、81年2月20日、ハンス・リヒター指揮のウィーン・フィルによって初演されました。《ロマンティック》というタイトル、比較的親しみやすい曲想、そして、ブルックナーの作品としては演奏時間もそれほど長くないといった理由で演奏頻度が高いこの作品を、ベネズエラの音楽教育プログラム「エル・システマ」でヴァイオリンを学び頭角を現し、BBCプロムスでの指揮姿が話題となったドミンゴ・インドヤンの熱きタクトで贈ります。リヴァプールのフィルハーモニック・ホールでのライヴ演奏からの録音により、コンサートの興奮とドラマが見事に収められた1枚に仕上がりました。

The bicentennial celebrations of Anton Bruckners birth have, unsurprisingly, inspired performances and releases of the composers works from orchestras all over the world. Here, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, under its chief conductor, Domingo Hindoyan, offers its take on one of Bruckners most popular works, the Symphony No. 4 in E flat major ("Romantic"), in its second version from 1878/1880. There is not anything particularly notable here. Theres some fine playing from the orchestra throughout, especially in the opening movement and finale. The best the orchestra has to offer is found in the very strong "Bewegt, nicht zu schnell" first movement. The orchestra displays great precision here -- bold and weighty or soft and lyrical as called for -- and the group stretches the dynamic range wonderfully. The winds are distinctly effective right from the opening horn call. There is a bit of inconsistency in the middle movements, not least of which is a noticeably different sound environment as the recording is stitched together from rehearsals, a live performance, and a "patch session" from several months after the live performance. The orchestra returns to form in the finale, "Bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell," and the recording finishes on a high note. Listeners have many choices of which to choose, of this particular version or the others, and there are sure to be more as the celebratory year continues. ~ Keith Finke
