ザ・ビートルズのレコーディング全音源収録という壮大なプロジェクトの第3弾。
ビートルズとして公式に記録されたスタジオ録音音源で、未発表アウトテイクも網羅しながら、時系列で徹底的にビートルズの歩みをサウンドで追いかける内容です。
この第3集はアルバム『ウィズ・ザ・ビートルズ』と『ア・ハード・デイズ・ナイト』のセッションが中心。1963年春から「フロム・ミー・トゥ・ユー」、「プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー」、「シー・ラブズ・ユー」と3連続ヒットを飛ばし英国での人気が高まるなる中、7月からスタジオ入り。1日に10曲を録音した前回と違い、1日に4、5曲をじっくり録音できる日程で、10月までかけてアルバム『ウィズ・ザ・ビートルズ』を録音します。カバー曲では、あらかじめBBCライヴで演奏しておく試運転作戦も功を奏し演奏力が著しく向上。「ユー・リアリー・ゴッタ・ホールド・オン・ミー」、「プリーズ・ミスター・ポストマン」など数々の名演がレコード盤に記録されます。
アルバムにはシングル曲を収録しない贅沢な方針で、オリジナルも「オール・マイ・ラヴィング」、「イット・ウォント・ビー・ロング」、「オール・アイヴ・ゴット・トゥ・ドゥ」など「これぞビートルズ!」というサウンドが生まれます。
ポールの恋人ジェーン・アッシャーの実家の一部屋をポールは間借りし、そこでジョンと多数の曲を書きますが、その1曲が次なるシングル「抱きしめたい」になります。10月17日に録音したこの曲が、やがて米国や日本での人気を決定的にするのです。ジョンとポールの作曲チームが、最高にクリエイティブな時期でしょう。
1965年になると、フランス・ツアー中にパリのEMIスタジオでドイツ語版「シー・ラヴズ・ユー」と「抱きしめたい」を録音。その勢いのままポールがひらめいた曲「キャント・バイ・ミー・ラヴ」にも取りかかります。そうやってアルバム『ア・ハード・デイズ・ナイト』の制作が始まると、同時進行で初の主演映画も撮影入り。この録音でジョージは12弦エレキを初めて使用し、それが1965年のビートルズ・サウンドの代名詞となるのです。この年の活躍でビートルズは「世界のアイドル」へと急成長します。
