アフリカ系アメリカ人作曲家の先駆的存在として知られるウィリアム・グラント・スティル。1931年に「交響曲第1番《アフロ=アメリカン》」がロチェスター・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団によって演奏され、注目を集めたのを皮切りに、1936年にはロサンゼルス・フィルハーモニックを指揮し、アメリカ国内のメジャー・オーケストラを指揮した初のアフリカ系アメリカ人となりました。このアルバムでは彼の歌曲を収録。シンプルな黒人霊歌を基調とした曲や、ブルース風の情感豊かな曲、意欲的な作風による曲まで、多彩な作品を聴くことができます。ピアノのための小品も3曲収録されており、「Swanee River」ではフォスターの「故郷の人々」と同じ旋律がゆったりと奏でられます。1996年から世界中で活躍するメゾ・ソプラノ、チャン・ヤジエと、白井光子に師事した若きバリトン、ガブリエル・ローリンソンの歌唱を、ヴェテランのハルトムート・ヘルが支えています。
