偉大なる「失われた」アルバムが、また新たにそのヴェールを脱ぐ…。
ロック・シーンにおける孤高のレジェンド、ニール・ヤング。彼が2024年に発表したアーカイヴ集第三弾に収録されていた1977年作の未発表アルバム『OCEANSIDE COUNTRYSIDE』が、当時ニール・ヤング本人が思い描いていた作品の流れに沿った曲順に並べ替えられ、"本来あるべき姿"を身にまとった1つの新たな作品となって、アナログ盤に続きCDでも登場!

ロック・シーンにおける孤高のレジェンド、ニール・ヤング。現代に伝えたい言葉をまとめあげた新作の発表にとどまらず、未発表音源のリリースや貴重なライヴ・アーカイヴ・シリーズをリリースし続け、休むことなく歌と言葉を発信し続ける伝説言葉/歌を発し続ける、まさに「生ける伝説」の名に相応しい存在だ。

彼が昨年2024年に発表したニール・ヤング・アーカイヴ集第三弾となる『NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES VOL. III (1976-1987)』に収録されていた、1977年5月から12月にかけてレコーディングされていた偉大なる「失われた」アルバム『OCEANSIDE COUNTRYSIDE』が、アナログ・オリジナル・シリーズ(AOS)でのアナログ盤リリースに続き、遂にCDでもリリースされることになった! 1978年発表の名作『COMES A TIME』に先行してレコーディングが行われていたこの未発表アルバムだが、今作に収録されている「Goin' Back」や「Human Highway」、そして「Field of Opportunity」の3曲は、最終的に『COMES A TIME』に収録されることで、世に正式に発表された楽曲となっている。

今回リリースされる『OCEANSIDE COUNTRYSIDE』には、『NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES VOL. III』に収録されている同名のCDに収録されている楽曲も含まれている。しかし、ボックスに収録されていたCDとは異なり、今回単独作品としてリリースされるこの作品は、当初ニール・ヤングが思い描き、この姿で発表しようと構想していたオリジナルの曲順を再現したものとなっている。つまり、未発表となっていたアルバムが、本来あるべき姿となって、ついに正式にリリースされることになるのだ。(1/2)

今作に関して、ニール・ヤングはこうコメントしている。
「1977年にレコーディングしていたアナログ・オリジナル・アルバムで、当時は未発表だった。ここに収録されている曲は、すべてレコーディング当時のオリジナル・ミックス音源だ。OCEANSIDEに収録されている楽曲は、私がヴォーカルと楽器を担当し、フロリダにあるTriad StudiosとマリブにあるIndigo Studioでレコーディングしたもの。そしてCOUNTRYSIDEに収録されている楽曲は、素晴らしい友人達と共にナッシュビルにあるCrazy Mama'sでレコーディングを行ったものだ。この宝物のようなアナログ・オリジナル・レコーディングを、私と同じように楽しんでほしい」

OCEANSIDEに収録されている楽曲はすべてニール・ヤングのソロ音源となっており、COUNTRYSIDEに収録されている楽曲は、ニール・ヤングと共に、ベン・キース(スティール・ギター)、ルーファス・ティボドー(フィドル)、カール・T・ヒンメル(ドラム)、ジョー・オズボーン(ベース)がレコーディングに参加している。なお、「The Old Homestead」ではティム・ドラモンドがベースを、そしてレヴォン・ヘルムがドラムを担当しており、アルバムのラストを飾る「Pocahontas」はニール・ヤングのソロ音源となっている。

この『OCEANSIDE COUNTRYSIDE』の収録曲は『NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES VOL. III』にも収録されているが、先に述べた通り収録曲順が異なっているだけではなく、実は収録されているヴァージョンも異なる音源が採用されている。今作に収録されている「Lost in Space」と「Captain Kennedy」、そして「The Old Homestead」は、1980年のアルバム『HAWKS & DOVES』に収録されていたヴァージョンが採用されている他、「Sail Away」と「Goin' Back」、「Human Highway」と「It Might Have Been」、そして「Pocahontas」は、『NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES VOL. III』のデジタル・プロダクトと同じヴァージョンが採用されており、また、「Field Opportunity」と「Dance Dance Dance」は、アーカイヴ・シリーズに収録されていたニコレット・ラーソンではなく、ニール・ヤング本人よるバッキング・ヴォーカルを担当したオリジナル・ヴァージョンが収録されている。(2/2)

In 1977, Neil Young was stockpiling enough amazing songs to last for decades to come. Multiple albums worth of material put to tape but never officially released around that time have gradually surfaced over the years, and Oceanside Countryside is another strong chapter in Young’s ongoing crawl through the vaults. Divided into two distinct halves, the first five songs here (the “Oceanside”) are Neil solo, playing most of the instruments and backing himself up on overdubbed vocal harmonies. More produced, re-recorded, or slightly altered versions of most of these tunes made it to official records sooner or later, making Oceanside Countryside feel less like a wholly lost album and more like a demo recording. The songs where the changes are the slightest are “Field of Opportunity,” “The Old Homestead,” “Lost in Space,” and “Captain Kennedy,” presented here in their original mixes but not too dissimilar from the versions that made it onto 1978’s Comes a Time and 1980’s Hawks & Doves. A noteworthy difference on all tracks across the board is that Young overdubs the vocal harmonies that Nicolette Larson would sing on later studio versions. The more exciting inclusions here are the songs that feel drastically unlike their better-known album counterparts. “Sail Away,” which was included in full band regalia on Rust Never Sleeps, feels insular and up close here. Stripped of the drums, fiddle, bass guitar, and studio sheen of the Comes a Time versions, “Going Back” and “Human Highway” open up to reveal a deeper curiosity and a softly glowing intimacy that gets lost beneath the layers of bigger arrangements. Not much on Oceanside Countryside will be mind-blowing for Neil Young completists, with very similar versions of some tracks already being released on proper albums and slightly different mixes having been available on various archival collections here and there. When contextualized as an album statement of its own, however, Oceanside Countryside makes more sense. These are the mixes and running order Neil took to the label as a finished album in 1977, and for one reason or another, the songs took different individual paths from there. Listening front to back, decades later, an intentionality comes out in the record’s flow, and the more withdrawn, inward-looking Oceanside gives way to the traditional country and rock group playing of the more joyous and communal Countryside. It’s a different way to experience some familiar tunes, and yet another window into one of the more vibrant periods of Young’s ever-shifting creativity. ~ Fred Thomas
