During its original 2000 to 2007 run, Gilmore Girls was a marvel, a smart, funny, and heartfelt TV show about the relationship between teenage Rory Gilmore and her young-ish mother, Lorelai Gilmore, played with humor, honesty, and nuance by Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham. The shows creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, happened to have an ear for music as keen as her instincts for characters and narrative through-lines, and along with plenty of superb indie-friendly needle drops from a diverse range of artists (from Big Star and the Free Design to PJ Harvey and Yo La Tengo, many of which are collected on 2002s Our Little Corner of the World: Music from the Gilmore Girls – Original Television Soundtrack), the show featured original background music from the gifted singer and songwriter Sam Phillips. While a few of Phillips cues appeared on Our Little Corner of the World, most of her music for the show did not, and in 2026, Gilmore Girls (Soundtrack from the Original Series) belated presents 15 pieces she composed for the series, along with three previously released songs from Phillips albums that were used on the program. As on many of her LPs, her approach to scoring Gilmore Girls was intelligently modest -- many of her cues featured simply acoustic guitars, some unobtrusive percussion, and Phillips adding wordless la-la-la vocals. Her music for Gilmore Girls obeyed the first rule of scoring -- the music is supposed to enhance whats onscreen without calling undue attention to itself -- and this is the one real flaw of this album. In context, this music beautifully served the story, enhancing the mood of the action, but by itself, its a great deal of tasteful strumming, folkie vocalese, and little else. While it more than gets by on its charm and Phillips sure sense for a melody, the four actual songs -- "Where the Colors Dont Go," "If I Could Write," "Reflecting Light," and a re-recorded fragment of "Taking Pictures" -- stand out in sharp relief simply because they have a lot more going on and were meant to be heard on their own. That said, if this is minor Sam Phillips, it certainly reminds us why her music continues to beguile, and her overdubbed harmonies are lovely and a reminder of how underrated she is as a vocalist. If youre not a fan of Phillips and/or Gilmore Girls, this album will probably not do much for you, but those won over by the series and the composer will revel in the warmth and quiet beauty of this music; its background music that will work as well on a quiet afternoon as it does on television. ~ Mark Deming
