Months after the release of the critically acclaimed Tron: Ares soundtrack, Nine Inch Nails issued its companion, Tron Ares: Divergence. The groups first official remix album since 2007s Year Zero Remixed, it does the job of expanding the sonic world of Tron: Ares while also adding exciting remixes from an inspired selection of artists. Taking a step back to view both albums, Divergence feels more like a true Nine Inch Nails effort than the main soundtrack because, although that was an excellent merging of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross two professional worlds, it still felt like one of the duos typical movie projects with the NIN logo slapped onto it. Divergence goes deeper into experimental synth-scapes, spends less time worrying about matching the film scenes, and thrills with high-octane cuts like "Godmode" and "Operand." When it does dial back the BPMs, the results are more ominous and engrossing than simply setting a tone for a visual. The main draw for enthusiasts will be the inspired remixes. Peel It Back tourmate and album producer Boys Noize delivers a trio of fantastic interpretations of Ares songs; all three are worth checking out. Elsewhere, Lanark Artefax, Chilly Gonzales, Danny L Harle, old Reznor pal Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto, and others put their spin on things, but its the Pixel Grip version of the Grammy-winning "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" that justifies this sets existence as vocalist Rita Lukea takes a turn on the mic, replacing Reznor on a transformative and surprising moment. Arca later puts her avant-electronic touch onto the second interpretation of the hit single. So once the last notes of "Shadow Over Me" come crashing to a close on Tron: Ares, its time to dip straight into "Converge" on this excellent extension (or, rather, Divergence) of the Tron music universe. ~ Neil Z.
