Weller at the BBC (Vol. 2)

■ UKロック・シーンの重鎮であり、数々のアーティストに多大なる影響を与え続けるレジェンドにして最大のアイコン、そして真のモッドファーザー、ポール・ウェラー。40年にも及ぶキャリアを持ちながら、変わらず精力的な活動を続け、新作を発表する毎にその彼の深い音楽性とクリエイティヴィティに満ちたスタイルで全世界のファンを魅了し続けている。昨年、自身の音楽的DNAを辿る作品『FIND EL DORADO』をリリースした彼が、2008年から2024年の間にBBCの為に収録したライヴ・セッション音源を集めた3枚組CD/3枚組アナログLP作品をリリースする。

■ タイトルに『WELLER AT THE BBC VOL.2』とあるように、ポール・ウェラーがBBCの為に行ったライヴ・セッション音源を集めたCDはこれが初めてではない。VOL.1にあたる『WELLER AT THE BBC』は2008年にリリースされ、この中には1990年から2008年の間に収録されたセッション音源が収められていた。今回リリースされる『WELLER AT THE BBC VOL.2』には、「Wild Wood」や「Start!」、「Broken Stones」や「My Every Changing Moods」、「Aspects」や「The Eton Rifles」、「Wake Up The Nation」や「Shout To The Top」など、自身のソロ作からだけでなく、ザ・ジャムやスタイル・カウンシル時代の楽曲もカヴァー。さらにハンナ・ピールとロンドン・メトロポリタン・オーケストラとの演奏や、キンクスの「Days」にコリン・ブランストーンの「Say You Don't Mind」、ザ・ゾンビーズの「Time Of The Season」、そして興味深いところではビリー・アイリッシュの「What Was I Made For?」などのカヴァーも披露されている。これらの楽曲を収録した番組も、BBC Radio2の「In Concert」や「Piano Room」、「Chris Evans Breakfast Show」に、BBC 6の「Music at Maida Vale」、そしてBBC Scotlandの「The Quay Sessions」と多岐にわたっている。

■ またアルバム発売日に先駆けて、収録されている楽曲から「When Your Garden's Overgrown」と「Boy About Town」が7インチ・アナログ・シングルとしてレコードストア・デイに発売されることも決まっている。配信でのリリース予定無し、CD3枚組はアナログ3枚組より11曲多い内容となっている。ポール・ウエラ―の魅力の一つであるライヴが堪能できる作品の誕生だ。

The second collection of BBC in-studio sessions and live broadcasts from iconic British songwriter and mod godfather Paul Weller picks up right where the first volume left off, dazzling with an expansive variety of material and styles. Weller at the BBC compiled his radio appearances that took place from 1990 to 2008, and Vol. 2 begins in 2008 and moves through 2024. Instead of working in chronological order, however, the playlist jumps around, beginning with a pair of subdued tracks --- the somber "Gravity" and a stunning rendition of Billie Eilishs "What Was I Made For?" -- before getting into rowdy and raved-up songs from a 2008 concert broadcast like the barn-burning "From the Floorboards Up" and the dramatic, tango-ready "One Bright Star." Later in the collection, more footage from this concert finds Weller and his band ripping through a rendition of one of the Jams most beloved tunes, "The Eaton Rifles," as well as the breezy, bossa nova-esque "Have You Made Up Your Mind" from his 22 Dreams album. Several selections from a 2019 performance with the London Metropolitan Orchestra and Hannah Peel are a highlight of the collection, ranging from more upbeat bossa nova-styled tracks to moody balladry like "Aspects," where the large orchestration lifts Wellers sad songwriting to beautiful, bittersweet heights. With so many years of his musical evolution covered, Weller at the BBC (Vol. 2) is stuffed with a variety of different curiosities and familiarities that will delight fans. In addition to many songs from his different solo albums, there are selections from his older bands (the Jam, aforementioned, as well as the Style Council), and even a stripped-down acoustic Zombies cover. Weller sounds not just comfortable but completely at home at the BBC, be it within the walls of the studio, or on stages being beamed out live to at-home audiences.
