注目のサックス・プレイヤー、レイクシア・ベンジャミンの新録音が、ARTWORKレコーズより初登場!NYに生まれ育ち、ニュースクール音楽大学でビリー・ハーパーやゲイリー・バーツらに師事。ジャズ、ファンク、R&Bが溶け合うサウンドで注目を浴び、ミッシー・エリオットやアリシア・キーズ、スティーヴィー・ワンダー、グレゴリー・ポーターといった数多くのトップ・アーティストと共演。また、コルトレーン作品に挑戦した『Pursuance:The Coltranes』、ダイアン・リーヴスやウェイン・ショーターをゲストに迎え、グラミー賞3部門にノミネートされた2023年作『Phoenix』、スタジオ・ライヴ・アルバム『Phoenix Reimagined』など意欲作のリリースも記憶に新しい逸材です(2026年3月現在、通算6度のグラミー賞ノミネート)。
「いつものように私らしいゲスト陣はいるけれど、今回は別の目的があるの」と語るレイクシア。2023年の《Phoenix》(瀕死の交通事故から復活してのアルバム、同年初来日も果たしました)、そして2025年のグラミー賞ノミネート作品となった単独シングル「Noble Rise」の流れを受けた《WeDream》は、彼女の視点の変化を反映した作品。「今の世界の状況を考えると、前作の物語を最後まで語り切ることができないと感じたの。そこで"暗闇の中で光になれるか"という考えに向き合い始めた。今の世の中はどこも本当に暗く感じられる。でも私たちは光になろうとしているのよ。」
ベンジャミンは、装飾的にゲストを集めるのではなく、進化し、革新し、音楽言語を再構築できるアーティストたちを選んだといいます。彼女が"アベンジャーズ"と呼ぶそのメンバーには、テレンス・ブランチャード(トランペット)、チーフ・シアン・アトゥンデ・アジュア(トランペット)、クリス・ポッター(サックス)、ジェフ"テイン"ワッツ(ドラム)、上原ひろみ(ピアノ)、ブラック・ソート(The Roots)、ビラル(ヴォーカル)、タリオナ"タンク"ボール(Tank and the Bangas)、ドラマー/プロデューサーのカッサ・オーバラが名を連ねております。
ディスク冒頭の朗読「First Light」から、テレンス・ブランチャードを迎えた「Beyond the Dawn」へと続き、アルバム全体で、瞑想と覚醒が交差するようなトーンを形作っています。生命力にみなぎった、高エネルギーのインプロヴィゼーションも印象的。暗闇を照らす光となるための、力強いアーティスト・ステートメントとなっております。

We Dream is New York–based alto saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Lakecia Benjamins debut for Artwork Records. It follows 2023’s globally lauded Phoenix, and 2025’s Grammy-nominated single "Noble Rise." We Dream is a true next step for her as a composer and recording artist: Its a shift in perspective, recorded as a response to the present moment in the world around her as she seeks, through jazz and spoken word, to become a force for light in dark times. She brings her own band: pianists Oscar Perez and Miki Hayama, and bassist Elias Bailey, alongside new drummer Jonathan Barber. As has become de rigueur, this 11-track set includes guest spots from trumpeters Terence Blanchard, Chief Xian Atunde Adjuah, and Sean Jones, pianist Hiromi, saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, vocalists Bilal and Tiaranna "Tank" Ball of Tank and the Bangas; and drummer, rapper, and co-producer Kassa Overall. Opener "First Light" is a brief interlude that features Blanchard and opens with a droning, atmospheric synth as he solos under her spoken poem atop spectral piano. It gives way to "Beyond the Dawn," a rousing spiritual jazz piece that finds her alto joined to Blanchards horn on the melody over modal piano, rumbling bass, and skittering, breaking, Elvin Jones-esque drums. The influence of the John Coltrane Quartet is unmistakable. Benjamins solo roars, squeaks, and soars. Blanchard begins slowly, tracing the blues in swinging post-bop articulation. Adjuah lends his horn to the smooth opening of "Mi Gente" that eventually erupts into a breathtaking Afro-Latin, modal call-and-response descarga with fiery solos from the frontline players. Benjamin brings her spoken word to the dazzling jazz-hip-hop fusion of "Ascension" with Barbers drums providing skittering accompaniment. "Dream Breaker" showcases Potter, Jones, and Watts. They swing hard, melding bebop and post-bop in a straight-ahead cadence that reflects Benjamins love of the jazz tradition. Tank Balls vocal adorns the title track, melding hip-hop and jazz fusion. Barbers shuffling snare-hi-hat-kick drum groove buoys piano and bass in meeting her swelling alto horn. He frames Balls rap and singing as she injects deep modern soul and gospel into the mix as Benjamin solos with smooth yet knotty articulation. The steamy jazz-funk of "Flame Keeper" features Hayama and Perez on synths alongside guest pianist Hiromi, Benjamin, and Potter pushing one another on the front line. Its synths and drums become an intro to the hip, swinging jazz-funk of "Hiromi Jam" before Bilal and Overall team on the spiritual jazz-hip-hop fusion on "Right Now." Overalls rap and wily synths balance piano, bass, and beats as Bilal elevates the melody with searing Afro-futurist soul in the latter half. Closer "New World" is a classy, contemporary ballad. Benjamins alto playing sings, testifies, and gently swings over crystalline piano, resonant bass, and ticking drums. We Dream is easily a contender for one of the years finest jazz records and stands as some of Benjamins finest work. No matter what setting or genre she takes on, her music remains holistic, affirmative, and visionary. ~ Thom Jurek
