アルバムタイトル『THE WOW! SIGNAL』は、前世紀における最も魅力的な宇宙の謎の一つに由来している。それは1977年に観測された、いて座の方角から飛来した強力な72秒間の電波バーストのことであり、その帯域幅と強度は地球外生命体からの発信である可能性を示唆していた。この異常な信号を発見した天文学者が、プリントアウトされた印字データ上の「6EQUJ5」という現在では象徴的な文字列を丸く囲み、その横に「WOW!」と書き込んだというエピソードは有名だ。これによりこの信号は「Wow! シグナル」と名付けられ、科学界のみならずポップカルチャーの歴史においても確固たる地位を築くこととなった。(1/2)

最新作からの1stシングルとなる「Be With You」は、うなりを上げる荘厳なチャーチオルガンの音色と、ある重々しい瞬間に焦点を当てたマット・ベラミーの同じく壮大なヴォーカルで幕を開ける1曲だ。『バイオハザード』などに出演しているエラ・バリンスカをフィーチャーしたミュージック・ビデオも同時に公開され、息を呑むような映画的ディテールで楽曲が持つ世界観を反映している。まるでSF映画のようなこの映像の監督を務めるのは、Nico Paolillo(DeafheavenやBAD OMENSなどのMVを手掛ける)。

If 2022s Will of the People was designed to be an imagined greatest-hits where the band cannily referenced high points from their catalog in the form of fresh tracks, The Wow! Signal does it one better by producing better songs that feel less like a paint-by-numbers parody of Muse and more like a band extracting the best elements of their DNA and creating something entirely new. The result is their most cohesive listening experience since the Black Holes/Resistance era. Conjuring those bits and pieces from throughout their extensive catalog -- whether its a riff reminiscent of Origin of Symmetry, a 2nd Law synth stab, or a shredding solo from Absolution -- Muse feels high stakes again, as if this music might actually help humanity in the impending alien invasion. For longtime fans, the origin of the albums strange title shouldnt be a surprise, as frontman Matt Bellamys obsession with intergalactic conspiracy theories and our eventual doom have been the bands bread and butter for decades, but for those unfamiliar with the odd name should know that it comes from a 1977 event when an extraterrestrial signal was received by The Ohio State Universitys Big Ear radio telescope and the reviewing astronomer commented on the anomaly with that titular expression. Keeping in theme, Muse even reference the "Dark Forest" hypothesis on the unnerving opener of the same name, which echoes the cinematic grandeur of tracks like "Take a Bow" and "Supremacy." That outer space setting makes it easy to file Wow! alongside Absolution, Black Holes, and Resistance, and the music also follows suit in terms of quality and scope. Purists still crying for a return to Origin and Absolution can rest easy knowing that there are plenty of crunchy riffs and chaotic breaks to be had, like on the heartbroken headbanger "Cryogen," the crushing "The Sickness in You & I," or on the monstrous bridge of the metallic "Unravelling." On the epic centerpiece "Hexagons," the trio play with 6/4 time, traditional song structure, and perceptions of reality (were dealing with six dimensions here) on a prog-rock journey that should knock the wind out of fans from every era. For those into dance-Muse, the neon-washed disco-funk standout "Nightshift Superstar" is as jarring a turn as the leap from Absolutions grand orchestrations to the "Supermassive Black Hole" single drop back in 2006 -- and just as physically satisfying. Like Justice and Daft Punk colliding with Muse, its got an outrageously catchy bassline groove from Chris Wolstenholme, Bellamys heavenly falsetto, and an infectious urgency provided by drummer Dominic Howard. Elsewhere, the albums beautiful "Madness"/"Guiding Light" ballad is found on the uplifting organ-backed "Be with You" -- which revives their 2nd Law dubstep fancies on a surprisingly effective boost of earnest romance -- and they even recruited Ellie Goulding on the loud duet "Hush," adding a refreshing vocal counterpart who can match Bellamys highs with ease. Beyond the theatrics and indulgences, Muse has always been about love and hope in scary times, whether its a pending apocalypse, alien invasion, A.I. takeover, or all-too-real global war crisis. On The Wow! Signal, theyve harnessed that emotion and paired it with their most solid songs in ages, reaching for something more in that great beyond. Its a seamlessly executed and proudly over-the-top experience, getting Muse back on track with a catalog highlight thats a lot more vital (and fun) than their preceding few offerings. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
