現代ジャズ・シーンにおける最高峰トランぺッターにして、コンポーザーとしても高い評価を受けるアーティスト、アンブローズ・アキンムシーレ、そしてブルックリンを拠点に活躍する気鋭ジャズ・ギタリスト/作曲家、メアリー・ハルヴォーソン。この二人がコラボレーション・アルバムを発表する。

互いの音楽性を長くリスペクトし合ってきた二人は、2009年にブルックリンにあるハルヴァーソンのアパートで出会って以来、定期的にセッションを重ねてきた。『SLO-MO NEON LUMINATE HOVERINGS』の収録楽曲は、2025年1月にニューヨークのクラブ「The Stone」での公演直前にリハーサルが行われ、その翌日にシアー・サウンド(Sear Sound)スタジオで録音された。アルバムは、それぞれ書き下ろした4つの新曲と、共作した1曲の全9曲が収録されている。先行トラックの「Soundcheck」を聴いて貰えれば、二人の音楽的実験と対話の断片を伺うことが出来るだろう。

二人は過去に2度、アルバム録音あを試みていたが、今回の3度目のセッションでついに納得のいくものが完成したと感じているという。長年の友情とコラボレーションを通じて築き上げられた両者の絆について、ハルヴォーソンは次のように語る。「共通の美意識と、コミュニケーションの取りやすさがあるのだと思う。どんなことでも気負わずに試すことができる」。アキンムシーレもこれに同意する。「すべてを受け入れつつ、何ひとつ強制されない即興演奏家に出会えることは稀だ。何もしなくてもいいし、何をしてもいいと思えることは滅多にない。それこそが、私がメアリーと演奏するのを愛する理由だ」。本作では、アキンムシーレが新たな試みとしてエフェクターを使用しているが、これは普段からギターで使用しているハルヴォーソンから自身のエフェクターペダルの古いモデルをリハーサルの5分前に渡して貰ったことがきっかけだったという。「アンブロスがLine 6を試してみたいと言っていたので、リハーサルの5分前に渡した。文字通りたった5分で、信じられないような素晴らしい音を出し始めたことには驚かされた」と彼女は振り返る。

芸術の精神的かつ実用的な価値を主な動機とするアキンムシーレと、一つ処にとどまることを良しとせず、つねに音楽を探求し続けているハルヴォーソン。創造への妥協を許さない厳格な実践者であるトランぺッターと、現代ジャズ・シーンで最も先鋭的なギタリストによる新たなコラボレーション。二人のケミストリーが創り出す繊細でダイナミックな音楽的実験の成果がここにある。

Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings, the Nonesuch duo debut by guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, was a long time coming. The pair have played together informally since 2009. They tried recording together twice unsuccessfully. In January 2025 they got together to rehearse for a duo performance at New York venue The Stone, and booked Sear Sound studio the day after for recording. The nine track Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings includes four original compositions by each musician and one co-written piece. Both players were celebrated for 2025 albums: the guitarists About Ghosts was selected as the years best jazz album by several sources including NPR, the Twentieth Annual Francis Davis Jazz Critics Poll, and Eighteenth International Critics Poll. Akinmusires honey from a winter stone was celebrated as one of 2025s best albums by Jazzwise, Mojo, Record Collector, and the Wire. On this album the music was created by determinedly balancing individual technical virtuosity with intuition and space. Their conversational interaction reflects a joint commitment to deep listening and adventurousness. A unique feature of the proceeding is Akinmusires use of a Line 6 DL4 MKII delay effects pedal for the first time; Halvorson had presented it to him five minutes before rehearsal. Opener "Prelude in the Ash" is a ballad introduced unaccompanied by the trumpeter. Its halting single notes and limpid cadence provide the guitarist with enough lyric richness to establish a poignant, circular, fingerpicked series of harmonic changes as Akinmusire moves across the horns registers, evoking blues and Catalonian folk music. Halvorson changes shapes, tempos, and keys as extended notes are bended before the duo joins during the final moments. Following track "This Vivid" shatters the peace. It literally arrives with a digitally delayed trumpet and flanged chord voicings before a literal scream emerges that is later accompanied by grunts and more screams in different pitches that loop back on themselves as the duo offer abstract conversation between them. First single "Soundcheck" arrives with Akinmusires cascading mid-register lines solo before employing the delay pedal, adding layers of hypnotic single tones. Halvorson responds with washed chords and wry humor, sculpting a responsorial with slippery arpeggios and shapes creating an environment for Akinmusires multiple tones to inhabit and move around in. The first moments of "Tangled Pretty" find Akinmusire in minor-key ballad mode. Halvorson adds breathing rounded chord shapes then circular fingerpicked changes as the trumpeter asserts an intimate lyric that moves off into improvisation. Halvorson introduces "Blood and Sand" with a bright yet balladic statement that proves fertile for Akinmusire. They follow its dictates into episodically rich terrain across rockist chords, pop lyricism, and jazz impressionism. The closing title track is the sets longest. Its multivalent textures and pillowy dimensions add a truly cinematic feel as it flows, drifts, cascades, and caresses the proceeding into silence. Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings delivers musical adventure with unshakeable confidence and poetically unhurried harmonic invention.
