Part of an ambitious project to record little-known Vivaldi manuscripts held in Turin, this album reveals a composer of greater range and invention than the familiar violin concertos might suggest. Performed by a large period-instrument ensemble capable of an impressive variety of timbral combinations, these works are consistently charming, light in spirit, and full of the irrepressible zest that makes Vivaldis pieces immediately pleasurable.
The albums greatest pleasures lie in its contrasts of mood and scoring of the solo group. The Concerto in C major sets a strikingly regal tone, opening in bold unison before embarking on a sequential treatment of a motive scored for tremolos from the whole ensemble. Its second movement sparkles like sunlight on the waves as a violin plays solo against harpsichord arpeggios, and the work as a whole stands out for its virtuosic harpsichord writing. The Concerto for Four Violins takes a different kind of drama: trills, tremolos, and ornamented racing melodies in the solo group generate real theatrical energy, while the Largo offers an affecting contrast with its dissonant suspensions winding through the solo violins. The wind concertos are equally rewarding. The Concerto for Two Oboes achieves the broadest range of mood on the album: its slow first movement touches the simple elegance of the French Baroque style, making it something quite unlike the Vivaldi of popular imagination, while the second movement features crisp imitative exchanges in the accompanying violins, and the Largo chains the oboes in bittersweet counterpoint before a bold unison melody closes the work. The Concerto for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, and Strings provides a nimble, exuberant first movement whose churning scalar figures are shaped by the musicians with perfect dynamic control. Gianluca Capuano and Les Musiciens du Prince find playing that is graceful and precise throughout. The Concerto for Two Violins is a particular delight in its finale, where the soloists trade figures with astonishing quickness, and the Violin and Oboe Concerto achieves a stateliness in its minuet, the two instruments singing together with lyrical ease. For listeners who think they know Vivaldi, this album reveals his greater depths. ~ Jane Harrison
