恋に落ち、そして激しく失うことも経験した2025年を通して書かれた本作は、各トラックにその感情の断片が刻まれている。

これまでで最大のサウンド進化を遂げた本作では、James Ford(Arctic Monkeys、Blur)、Ethan P. Flynn(FKA twigs、David Byrne)、Julia Michaels(Lady Gaga、Sabrina Carpenter)らと共に磨き上げたオルタナティブ・ジャングルを展開。Jorja SmithやSamphaも参加しているトラックはみずみずしいインディーポップや90年代エレクトロニカの要素を取り入れつつ、彼女のルーツであるジャングル特有のシンコペーションビートと重厚なベースラインが全体を貫く。

After producer, singer, and DJ Nia Archives released her acclaimed debut album, Silence Is Loud, in 2024, she entered and exited a relationship, which informed her songwriting throughout 2025. Emotional Junglist details all the highs and lows of this whirlwind period, from moments dizzy with ecstasy to absolute numbness and dejection. Silence Is Loud and Nias earlier EPs already established her as a unique voice, blending exciting, head-rush breakbeats with vulnerable lyrics, but Emotional Junglist feels like a big step forward. Even since Silence Is Loud, shes improved immensely as a songwriter and lyricist, seemingly unafraid to expose her deepest feelings while setting them to some of her strongest hooks to date. While still retaining the slamming breakbeats and heavy bass of jungle, the production is lusher and more radio-friendly, and the tempos are a bit more varied. Theres more guitars on these songs, expanding on the alternative rock influences present on her first album, and a greater presence of vocal harmonies, particularly on duets with Jorja Smith and Sampha. "Feelingz Go Numb" is just as alarming an opener as "Silence Is Loud," but theres a heightened sense of drama, enhanced by suspenseful strings. "Danger" melds sugary melodies with unabashedly sexual lyrics, while the breezy "This Could Be..." and "Dance with Me 2nite" set all reservations aside and succumb to the bliss of new love. The angelic "Train of Thought" has an ethereal glow that sounds unlike anything Nia has made before. The shadowy "The Darkest Hour" and "Lovers Grief" channel heartbreak and emptiness, as Nia struggles to move on. In the end, she regains her confidence with the charging, punkish "Boys in Blue." Once again, another powerful work from an artist who continually pushes jungle into new territory. ~ Paul Simpson
