ショスタコーヴィチの没後50年を記念して、2006年に発売された7枚組の映画音楽選集BOX(C49533)を新装再発売。
ショスタコーヴィチは15曲の交響曲や15曲の弦楽四重奏曲に加え、生涯にわたって36本の映画音楽を手がけており、この分野でも20世紀を代表する作曲家の一人でした。彼の交響曲や弦楽四重奏曲には苦悩や辛辣さが色濃く表れていますが、映画音楽では軽音楽からヒントを得た、ユーモアとひねりの効いた楽しい作品が多く、別の一面が見えます。巧みな管弦楽法によって、こうした分野でも最大の効果を挙げている点も見逃せません。

このBOXには、1920年代から1970年までに手がけた映画音楽や劇音楽を収録。シェイクスピアの戯曲に基づく「ハムレット」や、劇音楽と映画音楽の2つのバージョンが存在する「リア王」(道化の歌では「ジングル・ベル」の旋律が効果的に用いられています)、ロマンスの美しい旋律が人気の「馬あぶ」、ショスタコーヴィチ初の映画音楽作品「新バビロン」、ユニークな楽器テルミンを使った「女ひとり」などを収録しています。
厳しいソ連時代を生きたショスタコーヴィチの作品群を演奏するのは東西ベルリンの二つの放送交響楽団。どちらも当時は「ベルリン放送交響楽団」と表記されていましたが、CD1-3と5は西ベルリンのRadio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlinで、旧称RIAS交響楽団、現在のベルリン・ドイツ交響楽団。CD4,6,7は東ベルリンのRundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlinで、現在のベルリン放送交響楽団。一連の録音はベルリンで行われましたが、1988年から95年にわたる録音の間にはベルリンの壁が崩壊しました。CD4-7を指揮したユロフスキはショスタコーヴィチと交流があり、未完に終わったオペラ《賭博者》の補筆完成版の成果初録音を行っています。モスクワ生まれのユロフスキがこの録音に参加したのも、ベルリンの壁崩壊の翌1990年にベルリンへ移住したことが契機となっており、今では息子のウラディーミルがベルリン放送響の首席指揮者を務めているなど、歴史を感じさせるセットとなっています。
